Citizen Science in the Golf Vinoř Project: the Results and the Future

The Golf Vinoř Citizen Science Project is slowly approaching its end. This blog summarises what has happened in the project over the past year and what tasks still lie ahead. First, a reminder: the Golf Vinoř project seeks possible solutions to land use in suburban areas through Citizen Science approaches.

In 2022, we used the Maptionnaire platform to publish the first questionnaire called “Okolní projekty” (Surrounding Projects). In 2023, this questionnaire was followed by two complementary ones, namely “Pocitová mapa” (Emotional Map) and “Biodiverzita” (Biodiversity).

The first of the three questionnaires focused on projects in the vicinity of Golf Vinoř. The aim was to determine which projects that are already planned the residents would invest the most money in, and what else they felt was missing in the area. The second questionnaire focused on the perception of Golf Vinoř and its surroundings, exploring where people like to spend their free time, do sports, or, conversely, which part of the area they find unsafe or uncomfortable. The third questionnaire, Biodiverzita, explored the participants’ perception of the development of biodiversity levels in the Golf Vinoř area in the recent past.

All the questionnaires were closed at the end of September 2023, and the results were processed. The questionnaires involved over 500 unique respondents in total. The project results can be explored in a comprehensive story map. The local government, all meeting participants, and the representatives of Natland (the entity managing the golf site) were sent our results through email. The results were also made available to local residents through a link on Facebook.

Golf Vinořmeeting in November 2023

One of the most significant events in the project in 2023 was the November meeting on the Golf Vinoř project. The results of the Golf Vinoř project were presented by David Stella, followed by a presentation on golf by a landscape architect, Lucie Breuerová (Ph.D. student supervised by Doc. Klára Salzmann). These were followed by a panel discussion with Michal Bíšek (the Mayor of Vinoř), Andrej Halada (Editor-in-Chief of Golf Digest), Vlastimil Osoba (ornithologist), Martin Valečka (hydrologist), and Eva Volfová (former Deputy Minister of the Environment) on the panel. Our meetings created a significant stimulus for thinking about the area as a place that requires support for social-ecological system transformation, and so help to achieve harmony between ecological principles and local governance.

2023 was certainly a busy year for us in the project. What awaits us in 2024? In early 2024, two summary papers will be produced as part of the project. One will be authored by Lucie Breuerová, a landscape architect, and the other by the former Deputy Minister of the Environment Eva Volfová. Both papers will be based on expert studies written within the Golf Vinoř project, the results of the project itself, and information derived from the concluding meeting. In addition to consolidating all available facts, the summary papers will provide recommendations for the local government and the management of Golf Vinoř, which should be implemented over the next 5 years. Like the project results, these summary papers will be made available to all relevant parties. These recommendations will make it possible to evaluate the future state of the area and will help to raise the social-ecological level.
